NBA Midpoint Check-in: Top 5 Contenders for All-NBA First Team

At the midway point of the NBA 2023-24 season, the competition for first-team All-NBA honours is fierce. The competition is even tougher due to the removal of positional restrictions for the new season, but some players are already starting to have strong showings.

The 2023-24 NBA season has reached the halfway mark, and the race for the prestigious All-NBA First Team is heating up. With only five slots available and a new positionless format, the competition is fierce, but some players are already making strong cases.

The New All-Star Format:

This season marks the first year of the NBA's new collective bargaining agreement, which eliminated positional restrictions for All-NBA selections. This opens the door for more diverse and versatile players to be recognized, potentially avoiding situations like last season where only one of the top two MVP candidates made the First Team.

The Top Contenders:

Here are the five players who are currently the frontrunners for All-NBA First Team honors through 41 games:

5. Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks):

Despite concerns about sharing the spotlight with Damian Lillard, the "Greek Freak" is having a career year. He's averaging career highs in points (31.2 ppg) and shooting efficiency (60.8%), while maintaining elite rebounding (11.4 rpg), assists (5.9 apg), and defensive stats (1.3 spg, 1.1 bpg). With the Bucks at the top of the Eastern Conference, Antetokounmpo seems like a safe bet for his sixth All-NBA First Team selection.

4. Luka Doncic (Dallas Mavericks):

The 24-year-old Slovenian is putting on a show, averaging career-bests of 33.6 points and 9.1 assists per game. While his Mavericks sit slightly lower in the standings (6th in the West), his outstanding individual numbers should secure his fifth All-NBA First Team nod.

3. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Oklahoma City Thunder):

After his breakout last season, SGA is on track for another All-NBA First Team selection. He's leading the surprising Thunder to the West's second seed, averaging 31.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, a career-high 6.3 assists, and a league-leading 2.3 steals on an impressive 55.6% shooting.

2. Nikola Jokic (Denver Nuggets):

The reigning MVP has a much better chance of making the All-NBA First Team due to the new format. Jokic is leading the Nuggets to the West's third seed and continues to fill up stat sheets with averages of 25.5 points, 11.9 rebounds, 9.1 assists, and 1.2 steals on 58.2% shooting. A First Team selection would be his fourth in five seasons.

1. Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers):

Embiid is currently leading the league in scoring (32.3 ppg) and is arguably the most dominant force in the NBA. He's also averaging 10.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game, leading the 76ers to the top spot in the Eastern Conference. It would be a surprise if he wasn't named to the All-NBA First Team for the third consecutive season.

The Race Continues:

The rest of the season promises to be exciting, with other players like Damian Lillard, Ja Morant, Jayson Tatum, and Kawhi Leonard still in the All-NBA First Team conversation. Injuries, team performance, and individual achievements will all play a role in determining the final selections.
